Mary Jane Martin Duncan, 99, died peacefully on Monday, April 10, 2017. Born on July 7, 1917 in Union City, Tennessee, Mary Jane was the daughter of Walker Lawrence Martin and Myrah Nash Martin, and a sister to Annie Ruth Martin Hart. She grew up in Union City where she graduated from Union City High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1935.

She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She then worked in Nashville, Tennessee for a number of years. It was there she met Dr. J. Harry Duncan, whom she married. He served in World War II as Naval Air Force Flight Surgeon. When he returned from the war, she joined him and he completed his Medical Residency Training in New York. They moved to Savannah, Georgia in 1949.

Mary Jane became an active member of First Baptist Church, where she remained active for more than 60 years. She served two terms as President of the Women’s Missionary Union. She taught Sunday School for many years, and served on a number of key committees of the church.

She served on many civic and charitable organizations in officer positions; including Savannah Chapter D.A.R., where she was a 50 year member, the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter S, Garden Club of Savannah where she was a past President and co-chairman of Nogs Tour of Homes, and the Froebel Circle.

She was devoted to her two nieces, Belinda Hart Hawkins of Memphis, Tennessee and Suzy DeFoor of Atlanta, Georgia, and also her nephew George W. Duncan, Jr. of Sugarland, Texas, her three great nieces, three great nephews, and several great-great nieces and nephews. She will be missed by these young people who were such a great part of her life.

Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2017 at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2017 at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.

Burial will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to First Baptist Church.
